Taylor Swift is getting the last laugh, after all. While performing in Mexico City during her worldwide The Eras Tour this past weekend, Swift was getting ready to sing her hit song ‘Champagne Problems’ from her Evermore album when fans started to chant her name over and over again – for nearly a full minute!
Sitting at her piano, Swift was giggling as she covered her mouth out of pure disbelief that the crowd would give her that long of a ‘standing ovation’ in between songs. Despite being interrupted by her own fanbase, Swift embraced the moment and even left the crowd with a dig at her nemesis, Kanye West.

“It’s the best way to be interrupted, by the way, just people chanting your name. It’s really the only way to be interrupted, umm… and I would know,” Taylor Swift cheekily said as she warmed up the piano. She didn’t mention Kanye by name, but anyone who has followed her career knows what she was referring to.
For those who have been living under a rock (or simply weren’t born yet), Taylor Swift and Kanye West have been feuding for years – a feud that dates back to September 13, 2009, when both superstars were in attendance at the MTV Video Music Awards. What happened next was something no one saw coming.

Swift was nominated for the Best Female Video award with her song ‘You Belong With Me’ – the other nominations were ‘Poker Face’ by Lady Gaga, ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ by Kelly Clarkson, ‘Hot n Cold’ by Katy Perry, ‘So What’ by Pink, and ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’ by Beyonce Knowles.
T-Swift ended up winning the award – she was just 19 years old at the time (she’s 33 years old now, for reference) – and while a lot of people would agree with her win, Kanye West didn’t. In fact, he let the entire world know how he felt about her win – but did so in one of the rudest and most discouraging ways.

“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’m a let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” West said after walking on stage and stealing the mic from Swift’s hand – not letting her finish her acceptance speech. They’ve had a very strange and feud-filled relationship since that infamous moment.
Taylor Swift Thought Fans Were Booing Her After Kanye’s Interruption
After making his rude comment, Kanye West was booed off the stage and eventually asked to leave the awards ceremony. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift and Beyonce Knowles were backstage crying at the whole ordeal and Pink was allegedly screaming in Kanye’s face – telling him how messed up his gesture was.
It was later revealed that Taylor Swift thought the crowd was booing her – not Kanye. She thought they were agreeing with Kanye that Beyonce should’ve won the award and it upset her greatly. In fact, that’s why she was so emotional backstage – though she powered through it and performed five minutes later.
BREAKING: Taylor Swift talks about the Kanye west incident at the 2009 #VMA and how grateful she is to Beyoncé for standing up for women in the industry. "Beyoncé could’ve just said her speech and still wouldn’t be effected"

“I just told myself I had to perform, and I tried to convince myself that maybe this wasn’t that big of a deal,” she said in an interview with GQ in 2015. Five years later, she admitted that she originally didn’t feel welcome at the award show because she had primarily sung country music, unlike others, who sang pop.
Nonetheless, Taylor Swift got to finish her acceptance speech when Beyonce Knowles won Video of the Year toward the end of the 2009 VMAs. Beyonce, being the good samaritan she is, welcomed Swift back on stage and gave her the mic. Now, 14 years later, Swift continues to jab back at West over his antics.
