‘Starsky & Hutch’ Star David Soul Dies at 80 After ‘Valiant Battle for Life’ with Soulmate Wife by His Side

“Starsky and Hutch” icon David Soul has died at age 80 after a prolonged fight with health issues, with the help of his wife. In his later years, the actor was a dedicated family man and an ardent supporter of animal rights.

David Soul, renowned for his role as Detective Kenneth Hutchinson in “Starsky and Hutch,” has passed away at the age of 80 on January 4, 2024. He breathed his last at a London hospital on Thursday, following numerous health challenges.

Famed for starring opposite Paul Michael Glaser from 1975 to 1979, Soul’s death marks the end of an era in television history. His family was by his side, providing comfort during his final moments.

His wife, Helen Snell, described him as a “beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother.” Soul’s passing was the culmination of a “valiant battle for life,” as stated by his widow.

Soul’s later years were marked by a serene life in London with his soulmate, Helen, and a rich family life with his five sons and one daughter. Despite his struggles with serious illnesses, he found solace in the presence of his loved ones.

His health battles included a life-threatening stint in intensive care and a continuous fight with chronic lung condition. Nevertheless, he often expressed gratitude for the support and love he received from his wife, describing her as an “incredible woman, a truly wonderful person.”

Facing his challenges head-on, Soul was a self-proclaimed fighter, crediting his recovery to his indomitable spirit and the unwavering support of his wife. “I am a fighter,” he said, and acknowledged, “without Helen, I never would have made it.”

Reflecting on his wealth, the actor found it not in finances—partly due to selling his share of the rights to Starsky & Hutch for a modest sum. However, he said, “When I’m surrounded by my six children, I feel rich.”

His life in London with Helen was filled with more than a decade of shared love and experiences. He often proclaimed, “Helen is my life,” highlighting the profound bond that sustained him through his toughest times.

Beyond his family, Soul was a passionate advocate for animal welfare, actively supporting The Animals Voice in their fight against cruelty. He was especially devoted to the protection of America’s wildlife, reflecting his deep concern for both his seven grandchildren’s futures and the environment.
