Nearly six months after Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello announced their divorce, Vergara revealed the true reason the couple split after seven years of marriage.
The revelation comes from an new interview that first appeared in the Spanish newspaper El País.
Vergara, 51, shared that she and Manganiello, 47, weren’t on the same page about expanding their family.
The Modern Family star already has a 32-year-old son with her first husband Joe Gonzalez.
“My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom,” Vergara told the newspaper. “I feel it’s not fair to the baby.”
“I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore.”
Commenting on her own age, she added, “I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children.”
“I’m almost in menopause; it’s the natural way of things,” she said. “When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life; that’s what I have to do.”
The former Hollywood couple announced their separation in July 2023.
“As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives,” they wrote in a joint statement.
Two days after their statement, Manganiello filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences.”
While the True Blood star has since moved on, Vergara mentioned she’s “single now” during a recent appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
You have to respect Sofia Vergara for her decision. While there are certainly older parents taking care of young children, it’s not for everyone.
