A long battle with cancer
Shannen Doherty’s cancer journey began in 2015 when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. Following necessary treatments, including a mastectomy, she entered remission after two years. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in 2019, leading to the revelation of her metastatic stage 4 diagnosis. Despite the challenges, she has been vocal about her experiences, raising awareness and funds for cancer research.
In June 2023, Doherty disclosed the distressing news that the cancer had spread to her brain and later to her bones. Despite these setbacks, she remains committed to living each day to the fullest. Expressing her prayers and gratitude, she emphasizes thanking God for the meaningful aspects of her life without dwelling on excessive requests. Doherty’s strength in the face of adversity serves as an inspiration to many.
Previously, Doherty has shared her belief that the procedures involved in her journey to becoming a mother might have contributed to her cancer. She raised concerns about the potential link between IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and the recurrence of her illness, and how her desperation to conceive could have had an adverse affect on her health.
Shannen Doherty’s final wishes
In a recent revelation on her podcast, Doherty expressed her desire for her funeral to be a celebration rather than a mournful event. Instead of tears, she said she envisions people coming together to celebrate the life she led.
“I don’t want people to be crying or people to want people to privately [be] like thank God that they’re just dead now,” she stated, highlighting her wish to remembered in a happy and positive way.
Doherty also spoke about how she envisions her memorial service taking place in the comfort of her home, more like a party than a traditional funeral, so that loved ones have the chance to remember her in a warm and familiar setting. Additionally, she added that, although it’s an admittedly “morbid” topic, she wants to be cremated and have her ashes mixed with those of her dog and her father.
As devastating as this all is, Doherty is navigating her cancer journey with bravery. Her fighting spirit will leave an indelible mark on all those who follow her story.
