Field’s career kicked off right after school when she starred as the titular character in the TV show “Gidget,” where she played a boy-crazy surfer girl. Although the show wasn’t initially successful and only ran for one season, reruns helped it become a belated success. Field went on to star in “The Flying Nun” and later “Sybil,” which earned her an Emmy Award before she made the jump to movies.
By the end of the 1970s, her movie career had picked up steam, and she was known for “Smokey and the Bandit,” as well as her Award-winning Academy turn in “Norma Rae.” She continued gracing the screen with roles in “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Forrest Gump,” and later returned to television – earning Emmys for her work in “ER” and “Brothers & Sisters.” To this day, Field is still one of the most recognizable actresses in the industry.
Field’s personal life has been just as busy as her professional career. She first got married to Steven Craig in 1968, and the couple went on to have two sons – Peter and Eli – who followed in their mother’s footsteps into show business. Peter is a novelist and screenwriter, while Eli is an actor and director. Field and Craig later divorced in 1975 after being separated for two years.
Field began dating her “Smokey and the Bandit” co-star, Reynolds, a few years later. They appeared in several other films together and seemed like a match-made-in-heaven. Field described her relationship with Reynolds in her 2018 memoir “In Pieces,” saying they were a “perfect match of flaws.”
Future Projects
Sally told Closer Weekly that Burt made her feel desirable and “gave me a feeling that I was sexy, and I wanted to be everything he ever wanted.” While Reynolds referred to Field as “the love of his life,” Field viewed their relationship differently as time went on. She explained how she stopped “existing” during her relationship with Reynolds and that she refused to stay in contact with him for 30 years. She felt like a “fool” when she found out about Reynolds’ infidelity during their time together.
The actress later married Alan Greisman in 1984. They had one son named Sam before divorcing in 1994. Reynolds sadly died of a heart attack in Florida in September 2018 at 82.
Since then, Field has continued to make her mark in the entertainment industry. Today, Field is 75 years old and has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon. In February 2022, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Field would be starring in an upcoming project called “80 for Brady,” which is set to star retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady and actresses Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Rita Moreno. The film is being produced by Paramount Pictures and Endeavor Content.
