Neglected Cat Rescued and Relieved of Two Pounds of Matted Fur

Cats are often seen as independent animals, capable of taking care of themselves. Many spend hours outdoors, returning home mainly to eat and groom, which makes them relatively low-maintenance pets.

However, some cats have fur that demands regular grooming, and neglecting this can lead to serious issues.

Take Hidey, for example. Her owner was unable to provide the care she needed, leaving her without proper grooming for years. By the time animal rescuers stepped in, her fur was so tangled with dreadlock-like mats that she resembled an octopus.

When Hidey’s owner, who has Alzheimer’s, was moved into a nursing home, the cat was discovered by others who promptly contacted the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center in Pittsburgh. Experts estimated that Hidey had been neglected for nearly two years, during which her fur had formed dreadlocks as long as 6 to 8 inches.

Jenn Levitzki, a veterinarian who assisted in removing Hidey’s severely matted fur, captured the process in a video she shared on Facebook. She described the condition as “the worst matting I have ever seen,” likening it to dreadlocks. To ensure Hidey’s comfort during the procedure, she was sedated.

According to a post on the shelter’s Facebook page, as reported by People, Hidey had endured years of severe matting, described as resembling dreadlocks. “Our medical team removed pounds of tangled fur from her body, and it’s safe to say this cat is feeling much better now!” the post stated.

Hidey has since been re-homed with a distant relative of her previous owner.

Hidey’s condition was entirely preventable with proper care and regular grooming. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of checking in on our elderly neighbors and ensuring their pets receive the attention and care they need.

Let this story be a reminder to keep an eye on our elderly neighbors and loved ones. A simple visit now and then can make a big difference—not just to check on them but also to ensure their pets are well cared for.

You never know what challenges someone might be facing until you reach out. Spread the word and encourage others to do the same!
