Whether you know her from movies, TV shows or comedy, Melissa McCarthy is an incredibly recognizable face and name in Hollywood. She’s also an Oscar-nominated actress and comedian who’s more than proven her talents to the world. From her early work in sitcoms “Gilmore Girls” and “Mike and Molly,” to her leading lady roles in “Tammy” and “The Boss,” McCarthy’s style of comedy is a breath of fresh air.
What some people might not know is that McCarthy’s real-life husband is actor and director Ben Falcone, and the two are frequent collaborators. Falcone has directed various movies of hers, and together they run On the Day Productions, a production company that makes comedy films. She also credits her husband as helping her keep things in perspective.
Fittingly, the loved-up couple met while at The Groundlings, Los Angeles’ famed improvisational and sketch comedy troupe. While there McCarthy honed her craft and even made friends with fellow members Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph — connections she would keep and would play a part in her stellar rise to fame when they starred together in “Bridesmaids.”
McCarthy and Falcone instantly took to each other while at The Groundlings. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in 2018, she recalled being smitten by Falcone during one of his comedy skits. “I immediately was like, ‘Oh, he’s strange. I like him. And we were friends from, like, day one,” she said.
Together, the couple has two daughters — Vivian, 16, and Georgette, 13. While they’ve kept their children out of the public eye, in a rare outing in May 2023, the couple’s youngest daughter Georgette accompanied her famous parents on the red carpet. Read on to learn more about McCarthy and Falcone’s gorgeous daughters.
In 2013, McCarthy told More magazine, as reported by Us Weekly, she “got hit with the lucky stick with Ben.” Sharing the exact sentiments, Falcone added they “got hit with the same lucky stick.”
“From the very first time we spoke, we were on the same page,” he said. “We love each other, respect each other, and try not to sweat the small stuff. And we really make each other laugh.”
The couple got married in 2005, and in 2007 McCarthy gave birth to Vivian, followed by Georgette in 2010. From interviews she’s given during the course of her career, it’s clear that McCarthy’s two daughters have given her life joy and a stronger sense of purpose. She’s set out to be an excellent role model for them, as she told Hollywood Life:
“A biggie for me is, take the compliment … It’s kind of a rule with me — just say thank you, don’t negate it. I hope that’s one of the many ways I show my girls that it’s OK to like who you are and it’s ok that everybody’s different. If we were all the same, we’d be robots.”
In the same interview, McCarthy credited her husband for helping keep things in perspective for her. She revealed that in parts of her 20s, she was in great shape but took it for granted, however, now she has “two great kids and the dreamiest husband on the planet, and everything else is just a work in progress.”
The couple has done their best to shield their daughters from the harsh spotlight of Hollywood, but while attending the blue-carpet premiere of the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid,” in which McCarthy plays Ursula, their youngest daughter Georgette came out in a show of support to her mom.
Rarely seen at official events, Georgette looks like a mix of both of her parents. The family looked gorgeous as they proudly posed together. McCarthy wore a stunning electric blue gown with fringe detailing and accessorized with opera gloves and matching heels. Falcone looked dapper in an all-black suit with a rhinestone-embellished shirt, while Georgette looked adorable in a black frilly gown worn with a corset at the waist.
Now that their daughters are teenagers, the couple has been candid about how they’ve been raising them. In an October 2022 podcast appearance, McCarthy admitted she’d had the birds and the bees talk with her older daughter and as one might expect, the doting mom did it “incredibly awkwardly.”
“Vivi just goes, ‘Oh dear God, is this happening?’” McCarthy said. “And I was like, ‘There are different parts of bodies … uh.’ … I was just like, ‘Let me be awkward and get through it.’”
McCarthy stated she wants to be open with her daughters so they can come to her about anything. Thankfully, their conversation about dating was much smoother. The loving parents said they’ve encouraged their daughters that when they’re ready to date, to go for people who are “incredibly kind and respectful and only lift (them) up.” That sounds like great advice to us!
Additionally, they’ve warned their girls not to believe everything they see on social media. In an April 2023 interview with People, McCarthy said:
“We keep track of it. I think it is still something to be really, really watched. … I’m sure I don’t do half as good a job as I should because I’m so bad with it.”
The Emmy-winning actress added they remind their daughters that social media “is not real.”
“I keep saying this is smoke and mirrors and entertainment, which is fine,” McCarthy elaborated. “I’ve said, ‘It’s as if somebody takes a character I’ve played and assumes that’s the real me.’”
