Father Praises Teen for Taking His Autistic Son to Prom

Every now and then, a heartwarming story comes along that restores faith in humanity. This one, shared on Facebook a few years ago, continues to touch hearts and deserves to be retold.

It’s the story of a father, Mike Larson, recounting the unforgettable moment when a girl named Maddi walked into his office with a special request. Maddi wanted permission to ask his son Jon, who has autism, to prom.

For children with special needs, the desire to experience milestones like prom is no different than for any teenager. But finding a date can be daunting, and the fear of going alone can weigh heavily on their self-esteem. Maddi, however, wanted to make sure Jon wouldn’t miss out.

Mike, who is a teacher at Jon and Maddi’s school, shared his reaction: “Maddi explained she had gotten to know Jon through a school club that fosters friendships between kids with special needs and their peers. She said, ‘It’s his prom too, and I just think he should have the chance to go.’ My wife and I were honored by her kindness.”

Maddi didn’t stop at just inviting Jon. She wanted the night to be perfect. She found out Jon’s favorite color—orange—and wore a dress to match. She also booked a table at a restaurant that served his favorite meal: chicken fingers, French fries, and chocolate milk. Maddi ensured the night was tailored to Jon’s preferences, creating a magical experience.

Mike originally posted about this special moment in 2013, highlighting three reasons: to support kids with special needs like Jon, to promote programs that encourage inclusive friendships, and to remind the world that acts of kindness, like Maddi’s, still exist. The post went viral, eventually amassing over 1 million shares, touching people across the globe.

In 2019, Mike reflected on the post’s impact and shared updates. Jon, now 20, was happy and thriving, still living at home. Maddi, now married, felt humbled by the attention, considering her actions just a small gesture of kindness.

For Mike, this memory was monumental. “When Jon was diagnosed with autism over 16 years ago, I worried about what he might miss out on—like going to prom. Maddi made not only his prom possible but unforgettable. It’s a memory we’ll cherish forever.”

This story is a testament to the power of compassion and the profound difference one person can make in another’s life.

It’s heartwarming to see that kind and thoughtful people still exist in the world—it gives us all a bit of hope. If this story touched you as much as it did me, why not honor the father’s wish and share it with your loved ones?

This young woman’s gesture of asking the parents first shows her incredible thoughtfulness and kindness. Hopefully, they captured plenty of photos to cherish the memories of such a beautiful and meaningful night!
