Inside the Story of Alaska’s Abandoned McDonald’s

An old, abandoned McDonald’s on Adak Island, Alaska, offers a nostalgic look into a simpler time—before inflation, expansive menus, and soaring burger prices became the norm.

For those who remember McDonald’s in its heyday, this place might feel like a time capsule. Imagine a menu that was short and sweet, perfectly crispy fries, and the unmistakable red-and-yellow plastic seats. Add the charm of classic characters like Ronald McDonald, Grimace, and the Fry Guys, and you have the quintessential Golden Arches experience.

It’s no wonder that this abandoned McDonald’s on Adak Island has captured so much attention. Frozen in time, it stands as a rare reminder of a bygone era.

Where is Alaska’s Abandoned McDonald’s?
The forgotten McDonald’s is located in Adak, Alaska (Adak, AK 99546), a remote town on Adak Island in the North Pacific Ocean.

The spotlight fell on this hidden relic when YouTube photographer Chris Luckhardt ventured to Adak Island in 2023. While exploring the remnants of an old U.S. military base, he stumbled upon the long-abandoned fast-food restaurant, sparking widespread interest in this unique piece of history.

What Chris Luckhardt uncovered was a remarkable time capsule: a McDonald’s that operated from 1986 until the mid-1990s. When the Navy decommissioned the base in the late ’90s, the restaurant was abandoned along with much of the surrounding infrastructure. Surprisingly, parts of the McDonald’s, including its original menu sign, remain eerily preserved.

However, the site is largely inaccessible, with most of the building boarded up with plywood, making it nearly impossible to view the interior.

During its peak in the 1980s, the base housed over 6,000 residents, providing a steady stream of customers for the Golden Arches. But after the base’s closure in 1997—one of many shut down after the Cold War—the buildings were left to decay, slowly reclaimed by nature.

This McDonald’s was no ordinary fast-food joint. As Luckhardt learned from veterans who were stationed there, prices were significantly higher due to the logistical challenges of shipping supplies to such a remote location. For instance, a 20-piece McNugget meal cost over $6.00 when the restaurant first opened—a hefty price tag for the time.

Why Did the McDonald’s in Alaska Close?
Despite the elevated prices, the restaurant thrived, with Luckhardt telling the Daily Mail that it was “packed daily.” People in such a remote area craved those crispy fries and burgers. Looking back at the prices, though, it’s almost laughable to consider that a Filet-O-Fish sandwich cost $1.95 in 1993, compared to its current price of around $5.99.

Luckhardt’s discovery offers a fascinating glimpse into life on the base, where even a McDonald’s wasn’t just a fast-food outlet but a small slice of normalcy in a distant corner of the world.

When the military base shut down, the decision was made to close the McDonald’s on Adak Island. The owners shifted their focus, opening two new locations in Oregon instead. In 1994, McDonald’s sent a crew to the island to remove the iconic Golden Arches that once stood along the main road. However, there’s some debate about when the restaurant officially closed—some say 1994, while others insist it remained open until 1996.

A Curious Reminder of the Past
Today, Adak Island is home to just 33 permanent residents, a stark contrast to its once-bustling community. It’s almost unbelievable to think that a lively McDonald’s once served this remote and isolated location.

As we reflect on this frozen-in-time relic, one burning question lingers: Is the ice cream machine still working? Now that would be a true McDonald’s miracle in the middle of nowhere!
