Barbra Streisand Cherishes Her Gay Son Who Shares Her Musical Talent: ‘What More Could a Parent Ask For?’

Barbra Streisand is a true icon in the entertainment world. As one of the rare performers to achieve EGOT status—winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award—her talents are unmatched. She began her career in the 1960s, performing in nightclubs and on Broadway, before making a seamless transition to film. In 1968, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her unforgettable performance as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Streisand continued to dominate both the music and film industries, earning a second Oscar for composing the music for the 1976 remake of A Star Is Born. Now at 80, she remains a powerhouse in the industry.

While Streisand’s professional achievements are widely celebrated, her personal life receives less attention. She was married to actor Elliott Gould in the 1960s, and the couple shares a son, Jason Gould, who followed in his parents’ footsteps into acting. Streisand and Jason even played mother and son in the film The Prince of Tides.

The bond between Streisand and her son is exceptionally close. Jason, who spent much of his childhood with his mother, has expressed deep respect for her. After coming out as gay, Jason received unwavering support and love from Streisand, who has often described him as one of her greatest blessings. The pair’s strong connection endures to this day, and they occasionally share the stage, showcasing their shared passion for music and performance.

Barbra Streisand, born Barbara Joan Streisand on April 24, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, showed early signs of her artistic potential. At just 13, she created a four-song demo tape with the help of her mother, who was initially critical but became more supportive over time. Despite her undeniable singing talent, Streisand dreamed of becoming an actress. Her passion was sparked at 14 when she saw her first Broadway play, The Diary of Anne Frank. From that moment, she became captivated by acting, diving deep into studying stage performances, plays, and acting techniques.

Interestingly, Streisand didn’t formally train as a singer or learn to read music. In a 2003 interview with NPR, she shared, “I never approach singing as singing.” She recounted an early attempt at a singing lesson where a teacher advised her to modify her vowel sounds for better vocal projection. Streisand, however, preferred a more natural approach, insisting on singing as she spoke, and decided to abandon formal lessons.

Her determination and intelligence led her to graduate high school at just 16, allowing her to focus on pursuing a career in show business. She began auditioning for roles in New York City, and by the 1960s, her perseverance started to pay off. Streisand secured a part in the musical comedy I Can Get It for You Wholesale. She played the secretary to the lead, portrayed by Elliott Gould. Though Gould wasn’t widely known at the time, the two fell in love during the production and married in September 1963. The couple had one child together before divorcing in 1971.

In an exclusive interview with The Advocate, Barbra Streisand expressed her deep pride in her son, Jason Gould.

“I would never wish for my son to be anything other than what he is,” Streisand shared. “He is bright, kind, sensitive, caring, and a truly conscientious and good person. He’s also an incredibly gifted actor and filmmaker. What more could a parent ask for in their child? I have been truly blessed.”

Born in 1966, Jason grew up in the public eye alongside his world-famous mother. Unsurprisingly, he inherited a talent for music. In a 2017 interview with Billboard, Jason revealed that his love for music started young.

“I was a kid who came up with melodies. I’d sit at the piano and work out chord progressions I liked, but I never had the confidence to finish a song,” he explained.

Now at 55, Jason embraces his individuality while acknowledging the influence of his iconic mother. “The pressure of being compared or judged is something I know I can’t control,” he admitted. “Ultimately, I have to be authentic. No matter who my mother is, that doesn’t define me in the end. But we’re all shaped by our parents, aren’t we?”

Jason has carved his own path in the music industry, releasing albums such as Dangerous Man in 2017 and Dark Grey Skies in 2021. While his last name connects him to an international legend, Jason’s musical journey stands on its own. On occasion, he and Streisand have performed together, creating unforgettable moments for fans worldwide.

Jason Gould reflected on an unforgettable moment with his mother, Barbra Streisand, during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in an interview with USA Today.

“I didn’t know if my knees would buckle. I didn’t know if I could do it,” Jason admitted. “I didn’t plan for this moment, but I learned that I could handle it. Even weeks later, I still can’t believe I sang in front of thousands of people at the Hollywood Bowl. I don’t even recognize that version of myself.”

The experience left Jason feeling empowered. “After that, nothing seems impossible,” he said. “As I became more comfortable, I found I could adapt to anything.”

Streisand couldn’t be prouder of her son. Appearing on Katie Couric’s show, Katie, she gushed about his talent. “When I hear the things he’s recorded, the musicianship, the sound of his voice—it’s as if there’s a chamber music orchestra inside his vocal cords,” she said.

The close bond between Streisand and Jason is evident, though they’ve had their share of disagreements. Despite occasional differences, their mutual respect and support shine through. Jason has spoken openly about his admiration for his mother, describing her as someone with a generous and loving heart.

“There’s a lot of soul and heart in her,” Jason shared. “She’s a sensitive person with a big, generous soul. There’s so much love in her.”

Fans can keep up with Jason on his Instagram page, where he has nearly 50,000 followers. His feed is a mix of his humor, social justice advocacy, and a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his life.
